Maybe it’s just that we do a better job of hiding our various prejudices, but I was continually uncomfortable at the ethnic stereotyping and expressions of dislike for others who were different. Maybe it was the lack of social taboos about these things in eastern Europe. And so it was a constant stream of negativity towards those who were different – Romanians vs. Hungarians, Romanians vs. Gypsies, and Romanians living in Transylvania vs. Romanians living south of the Carpathian mountains.
In Bulgaria it continued. Bulgarians vs. Turks, Bulgarians vs. Romanians. And I can hardly describe Turkey with it’s polyglot of culture and distrust. Armenians, Kurds, Iranians……
